Tourist Attractions in Florence, Italy - Via de' Malcontenti

Via de' Malcontenti

A shiver runs through you as you walk down the macabre Via de Malcontenti. Aptly named, Via Malcontenti was the street that criminals walked down to the gallows through the Gates of Justice, known today as Piazza Piave, with the only stop at the Battuti neri Chapel. Surrounded by streets, the church was the headquarters of the confraternity of the Black-robed brothers which included the talented artist, Michael Buonarroti. The fraternity wore black robes with hoods to cover their faces as this was necessary when they assisted the condemned to the gallows with prayers asking them to repent.

You will also find on route the guild of dyers with a hospital for its members and an orphanage for their community. Between Via de’ Malcontenti and Via delle Casine pray at the exquisite tabernacle with Madonna, Saint John and Saint Peter.
