Baldovino is the type of
restaurant that's now quite common in Florence – a
place you can eat just about anything, from a salad to a
full meal, without hassle. Its unique atmosphere is down
to David Gardner, one of the few foreigners to make a success
in the Florentine restaurant business.
The refreshing decor takes in modern colours and interesting
art, mostly by a Sicilian artist friend of David's. Part
of the menu changes monthly; depending on the season, you
may find asparagus soup topped with ricotta Romana, gnocchi
with shrimps and artichokes, ravioli stuffed with rabbit
and chick-peas, roast rabbit flavoured with thyme, leeks
and lemon, or tuna steak with peppers and peas. Good pizzas
(Napoli-style, with thick, puffy crusts), excellent bistecca
(from Chianina beef) and main-course salads are permanent
features.
Early evenings in season are often packed with tour groups,
but they usually leave by 8pm. |
