On the ground floor of Palazzo
da Cintoia, this is one of the loveliest restaurants in
Florence, with three rooms that are the epitome of rustic
elegance – high vaulted ceilings, wrought-iron light
fittings, the odd well-placed oil painting and sparkling
crystal – though notoriously slow and sloppy service
lets it down. It's from Umberto Montano, the owner of Alle
Murate, who sets out to provide simple Tuscan dishes of
the highest quality in beautiful surroundings.
All the classics are there on the short menu: four soups,
pasta with wild boar or a smooth duck sauce, roasted veal
shank, rosticciana and bollito misto (with pungent salsa
verde). The wine list is exceptional. Prices begin at 16
Euro for a Chianti Colli Fiorentini, with Chianto Classici
starting at L40,000 (t20.50) and Super Tuscans and other
great vintages representing good value for money –
splash out on a '97 Solaia at 104 Euro. There are snacks
all day, and after 10.30pm pizzas (from Umberto's next door). |
